The Park

The Park

The Park is a mixed-use project located in the City of Scottsdale within the twenty-one acre urban park known as Scottsdale Civic Center Mall. The Civic Center Mall resides within a larger context of single family homes, condominium and apartment complexes as-well-as office, commercial, and the desirable Old Town Scottsdale retail area.

The unique site is shared by neighbors including the Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts, the Museum of Contemporary Art, the Civic Center Library, and the Scottsdale Historical Museum. The Mall is also host to various restaurants, clubs, and galleries, as-well-as music and culinary festivals. Tree-lined paths wind through the area and lead visitors past a number of fountains and public art features.

The Park is an extremely interesting project on four essential levels; program, context compatibility and engagement, form, and use of materials.

The program consists of retail and restaurant space on the ground level, office space on the second level, and two residential units on the third level. This combination provides an individual response on each floor to the multi-faceted fabric of its surrounds.

The floor to ceiling windows on the ground level combined with the gracious outdoor seating areas support an engaging patron and passerby experience. This treatment lends the ground floor to a direct connection with the public realm.

The more solid north façade, which fronts the pedestrian walk connecting Old Town Scottsdale to the park, transitions elegantly into an aluminum storefront system which spans from the ground to the ceiling of the second floor. As it runs the corner along the south of the building, this transparency continues, taking full advantage of the view of, and connection to, the park plaza.

Stainless steel frames with perforated panels extend out from the face of the building to serve as shading devices. They also add a delicate texture to the material palette.

A graceful articulation of the public to the private realm is accomplished by stepping the face of the building back and transitioning from the stone and storefront to stucco and large aluminum stacked sliding door systems. These systems allow the tenants to transform their living areas into semi-outdoor spaces, enjoying Scapttsdal’s wonderful weather the majority of the year.
